Horseback Riding In RoubideauLarry and Wanda Boyd graze their cattle on the Uncompahgre National Forest on a grazing allotment totaling 900 mother cows. This area is a series of mesas and canyons and is all the Roubideau Creek drainage. This allotment totals 75,000 acres and ranges in elevation from 5,700 ft. to 10,000 ft. above sea level. The Boyd 7N Ranch in the unique Roubideau Canyon area offers a variety of vacation opportunities. Our guests will be able to participate in the daily ranch activities and management of the cattle as they are moved to fresh pastures throughout the summer. In addition to the rounding up and moving cattle, fences need to be checked and mended, some salt needs to be packed to new grazing areas and grazing utilization needs to be monitored. The daily ranch chores will take you riding through sage, pines, aspen and spruce. Enjoy the fresh air and wide open spaces, the beautiful Western Colorado scenery and the wildlife such as deer, elk, wild turkeys, coyotes and an occasional bear. At days end, join in a game of horseshoes, try your hand at throwing a rope, relax by the fireplace, or enjoy a peaceful hike in the stillness of a mountain evening.

Cow camp cabin on the ranchThe Boyd cow camp, which is the 7N cow camp, is clean, warm and comfortable. The cabin has running water (an antique hand pump), propane lights, a refrigerator, and a wood burning cook stove. A private shower room is available in the cabin but the clean restroom facilities are outside. Guests may stay in the upstairs of the cow camp cabin with bunkhouse style sleeping quarters or choose the privacy of a comfortable tent. Bring your own sleeping bag or rent one at the 7N camp and sleep in the comfort of flannel sheets. Guest capacity is limited to 4 to ensure a quality, personalized vacation.

All meals are served home style. On longer days, lunches are packed on your saddle and lunch is along the trail. Occasionally, weather permitting, we have an outside barbecue and the guests experience the flavor of authentic Dutch oven cooking.

Ranch horses and the cow camp cabinThe horses you will be riding are our ranch horses and will be suited to each guest according to riding experience. All tack and horses are in good safe condition. Herding cattle in the vast landscape and forest areas can be a challenge for the riders. Most days consist of 5 - 8 hours in the saddle. Specific days can be planned for beginner riders with prior arrangements. For the non-riders, you can enjoy hiking, wildlife watching, or just relaxing.

Herding cattle deep in the forestThe cow camp is approximately 40 miles (1 hour drive) from the nearest town or store so we ask that you bring any items you may need. A few suggestions are a jacket, (denim is good), hat, warm clothes, comfortable riding boots and comfortable shoes for hiking if you wish, gloves, sunscreen, insect repellent, flashlight, sleeping bag, personal toiletries, and personal first aid supplies such as Band-Aids, aspirin, and any needed allergy medications. Our air is dry so you may need hand lotion. Our cabin is a nonsmoking facility. This list may vary according to the time of year of your vacation. At the time of registration, a more specific gear list will be provided. Due to the distance, nonscheduled trips to town will be made at an extra charge.

Airport pickup from Montrose is available. When making your travel connections, your Travel Agent can use the Montrose Regional Airport Code: the code is M.TJ. We would also like to encourage you to stay in the Montrose-Delta area to enjoy other scenic attractions, rafting, festivals, the newest National Park, The Black Canyon, and our many historical sites.

We are not a dude ranch. We are not fancy and we are not flashy, but we are real. We would like to invite you to share the joys and excitement of our dally ranch life. Enjoy the beauty and wonder of nature in the Roubideau Canyon and on the Uncompahgre Plateau, and come join our crew for a vacation of a lifetime!
